Literacyworks presents Word Up! A Community Learning Fair, taking place this year on October 7th at the Marin Center Exhibit Hall in San Rafael. This year’s fair will bring in an estimated 3,000 participants to celebrate the joy of lifelong learning. Our goal is twofold: one, to increase awareness of learning opportunities in the North Bay which will lead to an increase in literacy levels and the knowledge base of our population; two, to raise funds that support literacy programs in North Bay county libraries, schools and community organizations.
The Literacyworks STEM Panel discussion at the 2012 Word Up! Community Learning Fair featured female leaders in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, and was led by Dr. Jill Tarter, outgoing Director of the SETI Institute.

On the Exhibit Hall Stage will be acclaimed author and US Space & Rocket Center's Hall of Fame inductee, Francis French, speaking on Neil Armstrong and the Race to the Moon.
In the 1960s, two superpowers were engaged in a titanic battle to land the first human on the moon. Why did America get there first? And why was Neil Armstrong chosen as the person to make that first step? In this talk, Francis French will take you through the colorful personalities and risky decisions that led up to the historic moment of the first moon landing.
