“Supposing is good, but finding out is better.” - Mark Twain

Learning continues for a lifetime and no two learners are completely alike. Whether you prefer to read the instructions or tinker with the parts until you figure it out, our constantly changing world makes active learners of all of us. In that spirit Word Up is an ongoing project dedicated to celebrating, supporting, and encouraging lifelong learning. And while the vast sea of human knowledge can be an overwhelming place to explore without a map, Word Up brings authors, artists, musicians, and all manner of subject experts together in one place, for a festival of finding out.

We expect that the first annual WordUp Fair will bring in an estimated 2,500 participants and will be the first of many annual WordUp Fairs. Our goal is twofold: one, to increase awareness of learning opportunities in the North Bay which will lead to an increase in literacy levels and self advocacy among our population; two, to generate finaincial support for literacy programs in North Bay county libraries, schools and community organizations through The Literacyworks Fund.

Here’s what’s up at the first ever WordUp!

  1. The Learning Lounges
Our Learning Lounges cover a variety of themes in an interactive setting:
    • GreenUp – Environment and Sustainability
    • HealthUp – Healthy Living
    • MixUp – Art, Music, and Language
    • SkillUp – Computers, Law, Money
    • VillageUp – Family and Community
  2. The Stage
Demos and how-tos from the learning lounges, kid and family entertainment, as well as a special presentation from author Anne Lamott.
  3. The Promenade
Food, Fun, and Drink for the hungry intellect (including the Lagunitas Brewery Beer-mobile!)

WordUp Fair will be held on Sunday, October 30, 2011, 11 AM to 6 PM, at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, CA. This event is produced by Literacyworks, an educational nonprofit organization, headquarted in Petaluma. Literacyworks is a pioneer in providing communities access to life-long learning opportunities for adults, families and children for the purpose of increasing literacy skills.
